Success story from our investment team

“A new client came to us with reems and reems of old paperwork that he had gathered over the years. We discussed his goals and agreed to review the paperwork he had. After the team sorted through all the documents, we found that they had 20 investment and pension plans along with some company shares.

The client’s main goal was to tidy his investments to ensure his family would benefit upon his death and to ensure his family would not need to deal with the 20 providers he had been dealing with. We managed to consolidate the 20 plans into 2 which was beneficial to everyone involved and made the process much easier for his family.”

Individual savings account (ISA)

An Individual Savings Account (ISA) is a tax efficient wrapper for saving and investments. You are able to invest in a diversified range of equities, bonds and collectives. ISAs are very flexible and there are usually no restrictions on withdrawing funds however, there is a limit to how much you can contribute each tax year.

An ISA allows you to save in a tax efficient way as all gains are completely tax free. This is usually most people’s first experience with saving and can be the first step on the ladder of investments. If you have cash ISAs that you would like invested in the markets, our savings and investment advisers can transfer these in one go keeping the accounts in the year that they were invested. Please contact us if you would like to invest in a stocks and shares ISA or you have ISAs you wish to transfer.

Unit trust (General Investment Account)

A General Investment Account (GIA) holds investments outside of pension and Individual Savings Accounts (ISA) wrappers. GIAs offer no tax relief however, there are very few limitations. You can invest in a wide range of shares, investment trusts, funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) and there are no restrictions on withdrawing funds.

Deep Blue’s savings and investment advisers can provide you with the support you need if you are planning to make any withdrawals as you need to be aware of the tax implications. At Deep Blue Financial, if you hold a Unit Trust, we will annually move the funds across into an ISA to ensure that the funds you hold are as tax efficient as they can be. This will be done for you, and we will contact you to discuss every year. If you would like to talk to us about a Unit Trust our advisers are happy to talk about these investments.

Open ended investment companies (OEICS)

OEICs pool money from many investors. They are termed ‘open ended’ investments meaning they can increase in size as more and more investors buy shares in the fund. Shares can be owned individually or in joint names and can offer the investor a wide spread of investment risk within a professionally managed environment. Clients with appetite can invest in a variety of assets, for example, cash shares or bonds and across a wide range of geographical and industrial sectors thereby increasing diversification and reducing risk.

OEICs have a single price for buying and selling shares with any sales charges shown separately. Share prices are calculated daily and will fluctuate reflecting the OEICs net asset value. Deep Blue’s savings and investment advisers can support you with a strategy for existing OEICs or can recommend suitable options if this is an area you are looking to explore.

Offshore funds

Offshore funds are mutual fund schemes that invest in overseas or international markets. They are also referred to as foreign funds or international funds. These schemes invest in equities of a foreign country or region, or fixed income securities of foreign countries. Naturally, with international regulations and opportunities to be aware of, this area of investment can be a minefield. Deep Blue have the expertise to help you explore and move into this area effectively.
